Zaya Alta Fuerza Rum

Zaya Alta Fuerza is the overproof expression of Zaya rum, made in Trinidad and Tobago by Trinidad Distillers Ltd and brought to the U.S. by Infinium Spirits, which relaunched Zaya in 2020 and then added Alta Fuerza and the flavored Cocobana. Alta Fuerza means high strength, and that is the whole point: the standard Zaya Gran Reserva is bottled at 80 proof, while this is an overproof blend of aged Trinidad rums, including rum up to 16 years old, bottled at 57.5% ABV (115 proof) with no flavoring added. Trinidad Distillers runs a five-column stainless steel still on a molasses base, so the rum gets its weight from long barrel aging rather than pot-still funk. The producer's published notes describe a deep brown color with a hint of red, a nose of intense aromatic spices, maple and brown sugar, a bold palate of strong spice with buttery maple and brown sugar sweetness, and a long, full-bodied finish with a touch of heat; Drinkhacker found it far more approachable than expected at bottle strength, with well-sugared coffee, dark chocolate, banana candy and vanilla on the nose.
